Strategies for Packing

Packing. Ugh! If you've moved before you know that packing is one of the worst aspects of the entire process. When you think of wrapping and packing every item in your house, garage, and yard - from your king-sized bed, to your books and magazines, to the vegetable peeler - it can be daunting. But have no fear! The good news is that many have survived the terror of packing before moving to the city, the suburbs, or even moving from one coast to another, and you can too. The following moving packing tips will help you organize and make the packing experience a little easier.

Packing Tips - Before the Moving Truck Arrives

Boxes and supplies. Whether you'll be moving everything to your new home or storing items through storage services, nothing makes packing easier than having the right packing supplies on hand. There are specialty companies and moving and storage companies that offer all the packing boxes and supplies you'll need including standard boxes for moving, paper, padding, bubble wrap, custom crates for special items, and guidelines to calculate how many boxes you'll need. Also, if your moving cost budget allows, you can take advantage of the packing services offered by many moving companies.

Give yourself plenty of time. Packing can take awhile and it's easy to underestimate the time you'll need, so start using those packing boxes and supplies early to avoid a last minute rush.

Moving Packing Tips: Be Ready When the Moving Trucks Pull Up

The power of labeling. This is key to successful packing. You may think you'll remember what's in every box, but it never works out that way. Simply label each box with the name of the room and the main items in the box. That way your movers will know where to put each box in your new place, and when they're finished, you'll be able to find the coffee maker and electric toothbrush without having a panic attack. Write "fragile" on any boxes that contain delicate items.

Keep a moving checklist of your inventory. Be sure keep a list of the number of boxes you're moving and the main items in each box, as well as a list of furnishings. This way, if anything is missing, you'll know it immediately.

Protect important records. Important documents, such as birth certificates, passports, and statements for credit cards and banks, are private and tough to replace. Instead of packing them on the moving truck, keep them with you or have someone ship them to you separately after you've arrived at your new location.

Moving valuable items. If you have valuable jewelry, collections, or antiques, you may want to purchase moving insurance through the moving company or your auto and home insurance company to protect your special pieces. In the case of jewelry, keeping it with you through the move is the safest option.
