Storage Options When Moving
|
There can be lots of reasons for using storage services when you move: you might be moving from a bigger home to a smaller house or apartment and are not ready to pare down your belongings; you may have a period of time between selling your old home and being able to move into the new one; you may be trying to keep your current home for sale clutter-free while it’s on the market; or maybe you have remodeling or decorating work to complete on your new home before moving in all your furnishings. Whatever the reason, there are several storage options available.
Storage Services: Moving and Storage CompaniesMany professional moving and storage companies offer storage, and one of the nicest features is the company will load your furnishings onto the moving truck and unload it into the storage facility. Check moving company websites to compare services as well as prices – it never hurts to save money when moving.
Container Storage Services: Boxes, Pods, and CubesThese companies offer mobile container storage units in a variety of shapes and sizes, from boxes, to pods, to cubes. Basically these companies deliver containers right to your home where you pack them with the items you need to store. Then the company picks them up and transports them to its facility. Generally, you’re charged a monthly fee as long as your containers are stored. When you’re ready to have your furnishings brought back, the company will deliver the packed containers to your new home. Moving tip: be sure to make a moving checklist of what items you’ve stored to make sure you have gotten everything back intact.
Self Storage / Mini Storage Facilities: Do-it-YourselfSelf storage facilities offer stationary units for a monthly fee. While some of these companies offer loading and unloading services, a lot of people opt to do the work themselves for more moving savings. Just check out the moving truck services in your area, pack your furnishings in the rental moving truck, bring them to the facility, and unload them into the unit. Usually with these facilities you keep the key and no one else, including the facility, has access to your unit.
Moving Storage: Questions to AskNo matter how you store your belongings, you’ll want to check out some important factors like: what kind of security does the company offer; if you’ll have access to your belongings; if the company offers insurance against loss, damage, theft, fire, accident, etc. (if not, you’ll want to purchase insurance through your home insurance company); and if you can tour the facility to make sure it meets with your approval.
