Moving Insurance Information

There a lot of things going on at once when you're preparing for a move. If you're like most people, you're probably making your house or apartment moving checklist while standing earlobe-deep in mountains of moving boxes and supplies attempting to keep your household running smoothly amid the chaos while questions keep going around in your head: How do I update all my credit card and banking information? How do I go about connecting my Internet service, my cable service, my phone and television service? How do I keep my utilities connected during the move? Which moving and storage company should I use? When should I transfer my magazine and newspaper subscriptions? Can I get digital phone, television, and high-speed Internet at my new address?

But there's another question that is just as important as all of the above - how can you protect yourself from damage, loss, or theft of valuable possessions when you move?

Moving Insurance - a Must on Moving Day

Whether you're using one of the best moving companies or moving yourself with rental moving trucks, your furnishings and valuable items should be insured against loss or damage. It will add very little to the overall cost of moving and might actually provide move savings when you consider the cost of replacing damaged or missing pieces. This also applies if you'll be keeping your belongings in a self storage facility or through a storage service. When you're getting moving quotes, be sure to check with your auto and home insurance company and also with the moving and storage company you use to make sure your coverage is adequate.

Insurance from Moving and Storage Companies

Moving companies offer many moving services including "valuation." This is not actual moving insurance, but more a system to determine the amount of liability the company will assume. Valuation protection is offered in different forms: declared value determines the value of your belongings by weight; lump sum value or assessed value allows you to purchase a certain amount of coverage for every thousand dollars in value of your belongings; and full value protection covers the repair or replacement of damaged, lost, or destroyed property. Some of this coverage may be free of charge, but the company may charge a fee for certain types. Go over all of this very carefully with the moving company and then be sure it's included in the contract.

Moving Insurance from your Auto and Home Insurance Provider

Check with your auto and home insurance company to see if your policy covers your belongings when you move. If not, you should be able to obtain special short-term coverage for protection. If you have especially valuable pieces like jewelry, art, antiques, electronics, musical instruments, and so on, you might consider purchasing special coverage for those pieces just to make sure you're covered.
